Here at Wicked Fairy, there will soon be a change to some of our color ingredients. Up until now, I have been pretty adamant about not using ‘dyes’ for coloring any of our products. This is mainly because I have extremely sensitive skin, and am allergies to many dyes. Almost all of our soaps and bath products to date have used (natural) mica and herbal colorants. However, it has recently come to my attention that the FDA regulates certain color products as not safe for leave on products in contact with mucus membranes (i.e. soaking in the bath).
The two biggest problem children in my toolbox are blue and green micas, which contain ultramarine blue and chromium oxide green. Only one of my current stock of blue and green micas do not contain either of these. While these are both safe for use in soap, the FDA has stated that they are not safe for lip products or bath bomb type products.
As a result, I will be reformulating any Bath Bombs (such as my Rainstorm Bath Bomb) and Bubble Bath Cookies (like the Hyacinth one which contains a green stripe) to eliminate these ingredients and either finding alternative colors or using FDA approved dyes/lakes/colorants. The other place I would like to mention FDA approved dyes have been and will be used, is in the case of neon or otherwise unobtainable colors in soap.
The following colorants are used very sparingly in soaps here at Wicked Fairy, and are not FDA approved for bath bombs and bubble baths.
Neon Green: Polyester-3 (98-99%), Pigment Green 7 (1-2%)
Neon Pink: Polyester-3 (98-99%), Red 28 (0-1%), Pigment Violet 15 (0-1%)
Really! Red: Polyester 3, iron oxide, acid red 92
The following colorants have been ordered for use in bath products (and are FDA approved for all products made here at Wicked Fairy), but not yet in use:
Blue No. 1
Red No. 40
Yellow No. 5
Any products using any of these colorants, will have that noted in the product description, and in the ingredients tab for them item, so that you may shop accordingly. Meanwhile, I’ll just have to take lots of baths to use up my stock of blue and green colored products, and soak in inspiration for new things to deliver to you..
